A Brief History of Robin Run Village
They came as retired ministers, doctors, businessmen and women, teachers, and farmers. Many came from the Indianapolis area, but others came from across the U.S. and abroad. It was an uprooting experience but one with a shared vision of greatness for creating an innovative senior living campus. This enterprising group took the first concrete steps toward Robin Run Village’s development in January 1984 and selected its location on West 62nd Street. Kenneth Starky, a manager of thousands of acres of farmland in Marion County, generously donated the land. A creek running through the 86-acre campus provided the inspiration for the name Robin Run Village.
“An important theme of American life is that citizens of great experience want to give that experience to their community and would like to be together with other vital people and make sure that their leadership will have a focus in the future. They want to come together with other progressive, alive, and vital people.”
– Excerpt from Senator Richard Lugar’s speech after the successful Robin Run Fund Raising Campaign in 1984.
In the fall of 1987, a temporary resident council came together to write the community’s initial by-laws and put together a vision of how the elected resident council would function in the future. Finalized in 1988, the council established by-laws with an overarching mission of creating a “Resident Focused” community. The council began by developing a one-and-a-half-mile asphalt walking trail around the perimeter of the campus. To this day, residents still enjoy this feature of our beautiful campus.
In 2005, renovations and upgrades began across the campus. Robin Run Village became even more unique and state-of-the-art with an explosion of wellness opportunities, computer innovations, and a variety of new cultural and social events. By embracing the initial visions that led to its foundation, Robin Run Village continues to thrive today. But it’s the residents at Robin Run Village that make this community the BEST in Indianapolis.
